A few weeks after starting work in Lusaka I had the opportunity to spend a few days in the Kafue National Park. It is one of the largest wildlife parks in the whole of Africa. Despite its size and prominent location, only four hours’ drive from Lusaka, it remains little known and largely unexplored. Kafue holds possibly the greatest diversity of wildlife of any national park in Africa and I was fortunate enough to see a good number of interesting animals.
One afternoon we came upon a large colony of vultures. They were mostly high up in a clump of trees, but the one here was lower down perched on a branch of a dead tree. We thought their presence indicated that there was a fresh kill nearby, but despite looking for it for a while we did not find it.
