Bacup Morrisons Building Site

Bacup Morrisons Building Site

Well, it is definitely happening: Bacup is getting a supermarket. After years of planning issues and disinterest under the Tories, Labour controlled Rossendale Council finally got their act together last year and took some action. They circumvented the covenant that the Co-op had put on a piece of land to prevent any competition, by acquiring the land and selling it on to Morrisons. There is a bit of controversy about Morrisons arrival. Some people think it will kill of the remaining independent shops, but I think overall it will be a good thing. Not only will it create some much needed local jobs, it can also attract people to Bacup’s other shops and points of interest and provide some much needed parking in the town centre (provided they are not as mean as the Co-op, who lets a company ‘manage’ the parking, which means a ¬£40 fine in you park longer than 2 hours…)
